The Final Chapter

70. The Final Chapter (Microfiction/Meta)
The Writer looked at the blinking cursor on the screen. He had reached the end of his series. The final, 70th story needed to be written.
He stared at the page, paralyzed by the weight of closure. What could he say that hadn't been said?
A character from the very first story, the Martian Commander Eva Rostova, walked onto the blank page. "Just write the next word," she said, dusting Martian sand off her boots.
The Writer looked at her, startled. "It's the end of the series."
Another character, Elias the watchmaker, appeared, adjusting his loupe. "Time is just perspective," he reminded the writer. "The end is just the beginning of the next cycle."
The Writer smiled. He knew the final story couldn't be an end, but an invitation.
He typed the final word: Continue.
