Thorns, Thistles And Evil Spirit.Chapter 6,page one

When in 2009 after his father died in 2005 with siblings he moved into the self contain apartment till January 2012 and then moved again into another a dividend and a row of six times tenancy turn over till they reached the bushy house.
Quite often when a tenant pays his or her rent regularly in the country does not justify the tenant in the good book of the landlord. He paid rents regularly on behalf of siblings in this self contain apartment. Then often times the landlord would come every December and they had arrangement that was later changed to bank transfer to his account at uyo at akwa ibom or Abuja where he had another property and possibly three properties detected.Previously a little escort of the tenant Blackpower to access bank branch in ikotun was enough to withdraw money and pay him cash and it lasted perhaps more than five years or thereafter to resort to bank transfer and later in the last two or several years before his demise the tenant made transfers through ATM machine and POS itself not well developed device as at the time.
However most memorable experience was the friendly attempt to betroth landlord daughter. He had a rapport with the landlord and they seemed discuss Nigerian politics, soccer and hardly personal and a bit of socially exclusive matter.Anyway had a jovial relationship with the landlord. Why?Because he paid his rent regularly and at least every February and in most cases every January and had commemorated him several times.
"Black power you pay me regularly and am impressed about that .The other tenant in the middle one pastor something hasn't paid me .Why am I even telling you sef.So keep it up."
"My landlord the landlord the only landlord in the whole world"
"Black power you re funny"
And they zoomed into politics and discuss extensively and was fond of zik of Africa.Aparently often times at December times,he was fond of drinking before conversation.
"See my tenant before we start our discussion go and buy two minerals from mama akin ."dipped hands in his rear pocket and handed over little quid to Blackpower to buy cold drinks. Then banged out and banged in with the drinks with the next door neighbors and immediately commenced the conversation. He started to suspect Blackpower the moment he belittled Zik was somehow indignant as an indigene of south south part of Nigeria a move undertaken by black power which was deemed as a rude gesture to the integrity of the region that was carved out of eastern and western region in those days say 1967 or thereabouts especially Midwestern region.
"You seem to be found of zik and I don't know why?"
"Habba, don't you get it Zik of Africa is the only hero in Nigeria."
"Where did you get your history from?"
"I should be telling you.I m educated person .I went to unilag and I moved with high and mighty and am a banker and I made my home in Lagos.I should be telling you."
"Like seriously, what! And so what does that have to indicate with the issues on ground, that zik is the only hero in Nigeria?"
"Listen to me..."black power interrupted as dropped his bottle of coca-cola and cleared his throat  a bit.
"See my landlord make I no offend you or let me offend for the first time.i will not aggregate your comment for once as honest remarks."
"Do you know what Zik did for Nigeria?"
"What did he do?"
"You don't know what he did!"
"What did he do that others or other founding fathers didn't do?"
"He gave Nigeria independence single handedly of course ".
"Landlord you re a pathological liar.
We discussed it the other times you re so fond of zik.Jise people. If I may ask which independence?"
"He was the main force"
"No single person gave independence to Nigeria. Is he greater than awolowos, akintolas, enahoros, okotie ebohs, Herbert Macaulays etcetera in the fight for independence?"
"All those ones are subordinates ?"
"Subordinates how?In the London constitutional conference of 1954 who was the most dominating force? Was it not awolowo who singlehandedly provided the philosophy for the nation's independence? What is not his argument on federalism that provided the building block of independence that another yoruba man funded?"
" Which Yoruba funded the independence?"
"It was funded by the first millionaire in black Africa Papa D'a Rocha. You mean you don't know papa da Rocha? He died in 1959 and could not witnessed the independence day celebration and Soyinka wrote the independence play dance of the forest.Awolowo made the independence possible and akintola motion failed where enahoros motion succeeded.
The only contribution was he was the first ceremonial president in Nigeria at independence. He started at senate president from being the last governor general of Nigeria at least you know that.Senator Nwafor Orizu took over the senate presidency after him."
"He was a journalist probably the first journalist and had the biggest brands of papers and biggest printing press in the country in Lagos in those days."
"You re wrong but the biggest printing press and highest brands of newspapers such as the west African pilot and observer etc you maybe right. But he was not the first journalist.Infact the Yoruba people that introduced all skills and education into black Africa mentored him in journalism after he graduated from American university. He was an editor at African morning post in Ghana a paper owned by a Yoruba man O.A.Fashanu."
"Where do you get your information from"
"I think you know my work?"
"You said you were a journalist?Just show me one of your publication "as they stood up and stand Infront of his bungalow that was later willed to her daughter optimistic she would marry Blackpower a prospect that later failed. Then suddenly the beligerent tenant zoomed into his adjoining apartment and brought out his publication just one of his  vanguard newspaper publications in an interview of a thespian professor Sola fosudo a Don at the Lagos state university "with his name pasted beneath story.
"Oh alright is on your business card too.I saw it .Thump up too.keep it up".Then he stopped the argument.
At other time when he returned back to Lagos for the usual collection times they bickered over unpaid rents a remainder of ten thousand.
"Where is my remaining ten k."
"Landlord I don't have money now"
"Okay bring 5k I write off the remainder "
"See I use to borrow money to pay your rent sometimes something you don't know.If I collect cash from tenants in Ogbomosho,I use it to pay you or borrow It to pay you quickly and that was why I was able to pay you quickly never failed for once every January"
"Okay at least thumb up for that too."
"Landlord I wanted to tell you something o"quickly immersed in a flash back and he called him back as he bade to leave.
"What is it? tell me"
"As you can see we never marry me and my siblings we need wives."
"Get on the streets and go find wife. What is my concern with that?"
"Oh no landlord listen give me your daughter for marriage at least make she born for me"He was shocked
"You my darling daughter Maggie?"
"Yes"
"Let me think about it"as he departed and a year after he came back for the usual collection period and was surprised the story was all out.The daughter in question had visited several times from Abuja staying in the front apartment like his father and we got a good rapport. Then he confronted him and said
"What did you tell my father?"
"What did I tell your father ?"
"Do you want to deny?"
"Oh I could recall that incident now.The last time he came I said he should give you to me for marriage.
And at other time in one of our discussions he said can you handle her a well educated woman? She has second degree at least you know that."
"Pretty well.i can handle her."
"He embarrassed me in Abuja and said three men in my house in Lagos they never marry and one of them he will marry you.Go to Lagos go find husband."Maggie remarked .
"I said I like you"then they joked it off and for some time was fond of me and the man ceased coming to Lagos untill his death.During the latter part of his life they send him money either through POS or ATM machine. In the last year of his life black power failed to pay quickly in January and when he paid he had a remainder which was delayed.
"Black power where is my remainder of 20k ?"
"I don't have money now "
"So when are you going to pay ?"
" I don't know yet o"
"You re becoming stubborn now.I will tell my daughter to take action on you."
"Landlord this is Lagos not akwa ibom tenant who can defend himself well in court even has right more than landlord "then he barked off the call and not long after when the payment was made he died shortly and the daughter became landlady. Then she turned out to be repressive landlady against Blackpower for not pestering her with love gifts, romantic gestures consummate much earlier toastings and she increased rents and pestered him with outrageous NEPA bills unlike the method applied by late father.
To add salt to injustry the following year black power delayed rent payment full six months and was still adamant to pay and she threatened fire and brimstones. She also added pressure to the rent increase filed case with the lawyer and rent increased to one hundred and fifty thousand naira. The day she forcefully gained entrance into their apartment an attitude which was against the law he accused the siblings of damaging the property.
"Blackpower let me see the property"
"Don't you ever enter into the apartment behind my back okay" he gave her stern warnings after the first malicious entry and finding him stubborn perpetrated the acts in his absence seduced his brother to submission a too flexible white power
"Let me enter the apartment to repair the property"
White power unaware of the warnings permited her to enter under duress. Then he came back home and white power complained.
"See landlady badged into the house to repair something. She accused us of spoiling her father's property and did some repair on  the parlor wall."
"And you allowed her to enter after I warned and also you never to allow anybody gain illegal entry into the apartment.Dont you get it? Forced  entry is a criminal offense a misdemeanor a treasonable felony"
" I don't know but she forced me under duress."
"And you allowed her?"Then black power either on promenade to new stand or visit to clients for interview sessions or media houses searching for gigs white power felt irritated and damaged the repairs she made and at another loose times by white power was able to badge in and took snapshots for evidence at the police station and so police came one morning.
"Who is black power"police corporal from igando police station
"You re invited to the station for causing damage to the property.'
Then he called his lawyer and the phone rang ",sir I was arrested by the police.""oh don't struggle with them o just go to the police station and write your statement.I ll be there shortly."They entered into Keke napep and was taken to the police station in a jiffy as jealous onlookers and connivers and scorners mocked at a distant.
"Come and see they have arrested him.
Shame on him.he want marry landlady. He s now owing rent too.Stupid idiot. He toasted my daughter too."iya Rita mocked.
Then he followed the police and subservient wishes.
As they enter into the station with landlady at the back who later joined them,Blackpower sat down awaiting trial another police woman and also a prophetess called him.
"Young man come over here."as he moved closer and sat Infront of him closer to the Landlady who took the seat nearby passionate for everybit. This was after he had written a full page higher education narrative on the whole messy subject.
"Young man what is your problem?"
"I was accused of badly vandalized the landlady's property and not for owing rent six months into  the year."white power standing outside the same day unawared he might have been arrested for the property damage offence and when the damaged subject was invoked and suspect unveiled as white power the police woman says
"Bring him the offender lock him up"
"No officer I will take his place and cover my brother"
"No problem then enter sell on his behalf "
then black power was locked up in sell for a day and from the rent landlady just collected from Blackpower subject to intervention of pastor alab of African mission he was bailed the following day with 20k.The caretaker pastor was there and negotiated for his release.
While behind bars the mockery of his entry was particularly humbling based on the written statement against that he was owing landlady a huge sum of money. It became history when the clergy man intervened although Blackpower had suspected he was too light with the Landlady or might have been behind the incarceration subject allegedly that it had instigated the threat that landlord would increase rent perhaps to force them out and in one of their altercations the landlady was annoyed.
"How many years in my apartment now?"
"Close to ten years"
"A full decade?oh my god and you achieve nothing"and the next moment they were gone. The clergy was relieved to offer service for his release as being his Ogbomosho indigenes.
"You offer a good service for this young man"officer applauded
"Any little effort in the service of humanity I can offer for my nation I will gladly do it".

He had waited for an hour until several hours of extant trials and interrogations and hearings were concluded. Then he moved closer and sat close to the landlady. Then black power defended himself.
"Officer I was wrongly cheated in this relationship and the unfair treatment meted out to me by the landlord .She made forceful entry twice a criminal offense and the police came to my abode without any warrant of arrest.See the guys behind bars most of them thirty three there were innocent folks in there "
"See young man I saw a vision about you.If they say you have two or three houses in Lagos by now I will not be mistaken."her prophetic eyesight zoomed to high heavens and he pour more eulogy on his stars to the indignant remarks of jealousy landlady that implicated him. Then officer blessing as she was fondly called
"I see stars in your life and glory on your head. You re suppose to have many houses in Lagos now I repeat."she remarked once again.
"Why are you talking about him.Am the landlady here talk about me not him "
"Keep quiet please otherwise I'll locked you up like him.Your mumu  don do."
"Then black power threw the bombshell.
"See officer I toasted her and that was the original of my woe."
"You never can tell whether you would marry her at last"
"God forbid !Olohun ma je"Blackpower third sibling elder Sunday.
Sunny quickly went out after he was arrested and locked behind bars to buy 🍊 orange soft drink to the repugnant remarks of black power indignant about his attitude for the purchase as if he expected him to die or waste behind bars but he seemingly nevertheless understood the situation of justice in the country which was often been denied before being granted.
The stinky smell and rancid odour in the prison of twenty by twenty foot room with overcrowded inmates was particularly humbling to feel pity for the Nigerian situation. The police officer that was assigned to the prison took the register of inmates and reeled out names every morning and sometimes acquaintances and relations of the inmates brought food and resort to favouritism do occur and when an inmate is surrounded by loved ones and regular visits bribing the officer or DPO in charge such inmate could be released too quickly or fortunate with the moment of release.
A tragic incident happened one day behind bars a heavily frustrated woman in a counter blast grimaced his little boy.
"Pls help beat him is my boy too lazy he doesn't want to work"she sounded harshly and shouted over the counter as the officer pounded his head with police stick,as he struggled and resisted entry into the cell.Eventually compelled into the cell beaten mercilessly and he fell into coma.He woke up the next day.
More worrisome in a stinkpot a stinking situation of a woman in menstruation and so cumbersome with unkempt smell rent apart the air, putrid irresistible as the toilet stench. Two robbers of okada were caught and escaped and the other that struggled with the Police was brought in dead in the night with stolen okada.Black power had relayed the story to his sibling afterwards.
"You that is so stubborn and I knew you would struggle with the police you should they arrest you and lock you up for the house damage incidence."
"Uhmmmmm.thank you brother.Am sorry."
"I knew it anything could happen and I decided to cover you.Still you don't remember what mummy said,'your brother loved you '.You need to see how the police beat the indolent and insolent boy to a coma .oh my gosh .They beat him mercilessly and he was in coma lying down almost dead at evening time and he could not wake up till the next morning."
"You save me brother."
"Anybody playing strong head don't go to station and you do that o.They will beat the person to a coma with police sticks."
"Apeja" meaning fisherman"you saved me brother "
Not unaware of the damage caused at the property had chastised sibling for that petty action.
"I damaged that repair bro"
"You mean you damaged what?two wrongs do not make a right and he who goes to equity must go with clean hands?"
"She forced herself on us ."
"No matter what what you did was wrong."
"Don't you know I was arrested on your behalf and locked up instead for your offence.I can't go to court again. When the police interrogated who did the damage to the repairs and I said it was my brother and the interrogating Poli ce woman said bring the guy he should be arrested and I said no he s my brother and I will cover him and they locked me up on your behalf.Dont you get it!"
"Am sorry i didn't know."this was the conversation they had after police released Blackpower from detention a day behind bar returned to his senses covered his brother from being locked up.
With return from prison his uncle had heard the incidence of unpaid rent and was ashamed of his lineage and the family good name being dragged into the mud and called black power due to his sister's briefings from Abuja and the pressure piled on them to leave the landlady apartment.
"Leave that apartment with immediate effect"eldest brother from London called
"I Ve sent money to your account leave that place the landlady is an evil woman. She s a devil's workshop arrant devil a devil's incarnate and if he could arrest you with so much bitterness he could do anything to kill you."
" Uhmmmmm"
"Leave the premise okay."
"Then the sister sensitized uncle jony a university lecturer who later passed on due to another incident was related to  health issues. What unfortunate incident to an uncle who was shortly after his death awarded professorship at the university of ife. Then uncle says
"Black power why didn't you pay your rent.I was told you did not pay rent ten years rent. You disgrace my sister. What is your wrong with you?"
"It was a lie just a smearing campaign. Before I was arrested I had paid my rent and I paid rent every year."
"Are you saying educated woman don't know what she was saying?"
"Did my sister says that?Mind you educated what?"
"She has masters and you didn't have varsity education."
"You know why all this trouble uncle?"
"What?"
"I roasted I toasted her"
"Shut up.You didn't have university education and she might even be the angel at last."
"Which angel? She's an evil lady.Educated illiterate".
"You mean somebody that has second degree doesn't know a thing. You re too arrogant."
"Ask her anything about economics she doesn't know.We debate on Philip curves,we talk on econometrics, linear programming, stage theories,Marxian theory of surplus, who says demand create it's own supply and vice versa, neoclassicals and classicals . monetary management, great economists and their theories at least mention the prominent ones she doesn't know. What else can you know in your life if in these basics in economics and economic history you don't know. I find out later that she was buying lecturers like her ilks"he blasted her
"That is not my point. You have to be serious. My sister and her husband didn't end up well and I don't want you to repeat the mistake and I pray for you you shall live a glorious lifetime with happy endings. They left tons of properties at home and you should go back home and look after them. You shall end well .okay."
"Amen"
Shortly after they moved into the bushy area his uncle jony died and a year or two thereafter the last but senior uncle crown also passed one.He was fond of his tautology.
"You re only eating in Lagos."This means Im Yoruba parlance "onje nikan Le nje leko"and his upbeat and moral concern to revive family silver was his major concern until his demise.
"When re you going to revive fruito?"indirectly grumbled this axiom till his death.Black power had wonderful family like almost every Nigerian house hold proud of their genealogies regardless of their internal wranglings.

The ordeal of tenant challenges gripping the simply average Nigerians was a full account of public sympathy and public empathy for any citizen in the country.Shortly after a decade in the yemisi okelola street, they moved into the unity street often crossed in into the enclosure from African mission street a short cut to unity street. The dilapidated and abandoned property after the demise of the owner took several years of desertion and desolation where thorny bush ravaged the environment of the shabby building with leaky roofs and grotesque voices of the crickets and nocturnal horror sounding creatures in the thicky bush. Then afterwards of the erstwhile threat and departure from the compounds of former landlady who took over the property after his own father died, they moved into the abandoned areas. The first immediate surrounding not far from the thorny bush was cleared by black power in the lonely period when his siblings were away at work places.
The thorny bush in the most egregious inclemency stood impenitently like a rock of Gibraltar as it were when the black power family moved into the bushy enclave enclosed with thorns and thistles .
None a machismo daring enough to wield the purgatory intense badly needed by the environment to make it clean. Therefore it became a thorn in the flesh and sometimes at night the childish elements cavort around and shriek at the evening times making love in the enclosed bush with such shrieks and epicurean moan to suggest the intricate happenstance of the unholy hours.Sometimes marauders took infraction to raid the bushy terrain with shouts of thieves rampaging the mini forest.
"Ole! Ole!! Ole !!!"a bullied passerby raved in the broad daylight combing the vicinage in search and chase of suspected thieves plowing the areas.
"Landlord is coming if you don't cut the bush. if you cut off those mess we ll have peace."another passer cajoled
"This is Lagos a civilised metropolis.Goddamn it"a local gin seller boasted
"I saw snakes and reptiles yesterday.Dont you get it"caretaker pastor noted
"Black power go and cut am angry with you"
The rage had enforced him to cut the bush in record but half completed.Although they had cut it off completely when they first moved in and kayode kola sibling had cleared the thicky bush two years ago and it grew rapidly with the rain fall to current position. Then one day the caretaker had summoned courage to brief the landlord of the unholy activities and the insensitivity of his tenants and he came one day banging the door and only black power was around with siblings scampered off to work.
"Who is in the house"
"Who is around, your landlord is around come out"
"I tell you they re not critically responsible to the situation around.i will take the house from thm and give it to church."landlady raged
"Oh madam from frying pan to fire.To give it to them is that easy you mean for the church people but to get it back is the problem."
"They won't leave"the civil servant from the council retorted"
"Why re you my tenant ? Won't you come out?"as black power eased hurriedly in the toilet came out with dread and escorted them to raging scene and furiously rage in their goofs of pointificates.
"What re you doing in this place that you can't cut this thicky bush?"
"So lazy so useless. You can't clean your environment."Landlord stood adjoining the landlady who now sat on the cemetery where they buried the late landlord shouted on top of his voice. They cited the instances of old widow around or near the building.
"You re so lazy you can't even clear the bush and see the old widow her surrounding was cleared ,safe and sound.Haba."
Your mumu don do okay.If I come back next time and I don't see you clear this thicky bush I will get you expelled from the house.okay.Is that's clear"landlady stood up from the grave yard.
"Am all ear sir.We will clear it."
"Why don't you clear it before?"
"We did but it grew up so quickly."
"Am warning you for the upteempth time I must not see it next time if I come around. Is that clear.Cant you speak?"
"Yes sir"Then they cooled down and moved around the uncovered well.
"Absolutely you re not responsible when you move in here you saw the well water opened and you can't even close it haba!"
"Am exhausted landlady.See go find an improvised cover to lid it if you cannot afford to pay welder.Did you hear me?"
"Yes sir"black power retorted in dread. Then as they heaped traduce on black power they heaped eulogy on the caretaker of the property and his altruism for managing the property while away. The alaka family moved from the property after the demise of their late family and some traveled overseas and they buried the decease in the same property.
"We re lucky the pastor is managing the property for us.Thank you pastor"as the landlady turned back to greet him once again warmly."
"No mention "
"I once chased away a tenant here.A lazy woman who would not clean the bush."
The pathetic civil servant a stone throw away from their discussion overseeing sanitation services at the council who was beckoned to intervene in the matter alongside the caretaker began to interrogate the matter facing black power.
"Hello young man as tenant here you re suppose to cater for the sanitation of the around.Wait a minute what is your avocation?"council man said
"Oh am a journalist by profession"
"Jesus a respectable journalist for that matter.Venerable men of the fourth estate. And they re yabbing you like this?"
"We use to cut and it often times quickly grows up."
"Anyway try okay.I will live you now because of your profession and council will not be notified of the sanitation offence.Take care."
"Much thanks sir"as the threatening entourage with the enthralled sanitation officer winced away in the enclosed passage into the next street of African mission from unity street heaping praises on the caretaker and incidentally also the pastor of the African mission a ministry with two or three acres of land in the street adjoining taiwo street and the yemisi okelola street in which the black power and two siblings once lived for a decade prior to exit into the alaka house.
Alaka prior to his demise according to story from the hag or harridan or the next door neighbor to black power siblings a virago at one point in her low senses belched the anecdotes.Alaka hailed from Oyo state same with black power and siblings built the now leaky bungalow of four bedrooms and settled down in the place and lived there until his demise as evidence by the graveyard. The well water in the region was a beehive of free citizens in the area fetching free water for daily survival.
They drove into the African mission street with mordern jeep Wrangler and the sanitation officer was caught in the excitement when the clergy man interrogated the landlord the son of the Landlady wore a designer T.shirt and poshy jeans.
"So where re you now?"pastor inquired
"I just came back from the states."switched to a video call with her sister in the state unleashed the camera on himself and black power standing nearby "
See the old men living in your house."laughing mockingly and it latter dawned on black power the critique sense of the intimidating mockery looking down ignominiously like a criminal.
At a few paces away at somewhat agonizing diameter a hag,an harridan a tempest of virago a dejected old widow stood obstinately moved into many years from rented apartment after her late husband bought the land and built a ramshackled hit like building in the place not plastered thatched window and old Salanga toilet of those days. She took over the house hold after the demise of het his and. This plank of endangered enfanteribble widow somehow made life a hell for black power in the bloody radius. The first time they moved into the bushy vicinage, left to him,he had no qualm nor misgivings whatsoever but his siblings sunny ran away from the much dreaded spot since Alaska's death the family fled the place .
Likewise an agent friend of him laude lasupo could not get them a house even though he did was not comparative to this befitting duplex fitted perfectly for a family in the jettisoned distance.Sunny a former prayer warrior and learning or more or less an apprentice Pastor and a loyal member of Sword of the spirit ministry in Ibadan owned by Francis Wale Oke a supposed father in the lord who joined the siblings in Lagos from Ibadan where he hibernated after school. There the full family moved from ijegun still prayer warrior as usual but couldn't sustain the rigor of Christian faith resort to factory work to support himself They were together until they moved into the bushy enclave.
"Why did you run away?"agent laude lasupo two decade old friend and sometimes a fiend with black power interrogated after his visit to the agent office much unknown to black power untill thereafter.
"We can't live in the place.I saw snakes, reptiles and horror sounding creatures in the place ."
"What do you mean?"
"Evil spirits Spurs from the spirit of the dead surrounded the place and the graveyard.Daemons making grievous sounds and hideous noises at night.Find another house for us.We cant live there. Please do."shivering with dread as the agent thereafter met his friend when the situation normalized to brief him the comedy the tragically tales of his brother whom he regarded as lounge lizard a sort of cartooned character emitted heavy laughter in the sitting room and library corner of black power.
The first and the only day laude visited us as the august visitor barred the story to his friend making a mockery and laughing stock of once audacious prayer warrior gone sour and stale over time and weather beaten by stress and distress of wilderness trials.
"He said panting find us another house .Person could die in that place .I saw big snakes and full of daemons"laide laughed hysterically to knock his head .
Although black power was still reluctant to relinquish the old apartment of the nefarious landlady held to the wobbling proof that the rent paid would soon lapse till December before they moved in January as the case maybe, but the caretaker had forewarned black power of stupendous pertinacity to run counter to his self esteem and family dignity to leave the landlady.
"I Ve warned you to leave the place .I will find you another house and you move in.Be at peace with your self.Do you understand?"
But black power still reluctantly went ahead to pay the rent of 120k to the landlady and she almost denied the sum and it was heavily drummed into her ears.
"Who paid the money into my account? Are you the payer?"affront from dirty tongue
"Can't you see it? What's your problem?"
"You paid money into the account. We could not even see the source no head no source from which bank!"affront again
. Black power decided not reply whereas through corporate account that had the company name but nevertheless the fund sent .An incident that happened prior to the arrest . Meanwhile sunny had started packing their warped belongings into bushy bungalow regardless of the evil spirit assumed to be tormenting the alaka house but the threat of prior threat that menaced him to flee into the bush was not better than the subsequent threat of evil spirit in the alaka house and certainly not from frying pan into fire. The scoldings from eldest sibling in London was the last straw for black power to join his brother into the supposedly evil bush. One morning he went to confirm his brothers suspicion who after packed almost all the belongings remaining the biggest items still fled back to complain. Then black power being a curious adventure was laughing at his siblings sunny spread the bug of dread to white power and it was as if they had peddled the dread to think it would bugg black power and it was all noises and nothing but sacrosanct noises. He was used to evil spirit at night and was find of relaying demonic dreams to his siblings for years .He was find of fetish and diabolic IFA cults and what the christianized Yorubaland advocated against .He hoped to write novels with it someday emulating while Soyinka who was Ogun worshipper and such style could sell the writer's work championing the culture and traditions of their spirit. He wanted to explore all of sudden the alaka spirit of the dead .
"Let us go there to see it"
"No no no go there yourself.Who don't know you before Na bad bad things like you dey like.I will not follow you"
"Keep quiet you re going to live with evil spirit.Snakes are there"dread crept a stratosphere.
He kept up wondering about the place though he succumbed to his fate packing remaining belongings and after he was informed the rent for the bushy house was paid from overseas he jumped in but wine caveat:
"Pastor you be our godfather in this place.Do we have any agreement in place to avoid the same condition we experienced here?"
"What do you want stubborn man? They have paid already.Move your belongings and the remaining items.okay."
"I know but in case a episode come up again we can avoid it now "
"What are you saying?"
"What if they accuse us of damaging the new house like the landlady here did to us?"
"No worry just move and trust me" he slowed his breathing rate on the open street where he bared his minds of three landlords including pastor hearing the matter. Now he was elated the rent was paid though unhappy the money that waa badly needed to register private limited liability was wasted and unhappy not to live by December whereas the landlady fought hard to push them out not to spend a decade in the place especially since they were no more on speaking terms. He moved into the bushy environment with anger and desperation after second visit carried shovel and weeded the immediate environment leaving the bush few paces away and he saw the plumbing works was badly dilapidated and no functioning toilets and everything in the state of remarkable disrepair "
White power where are you ?"
"Am in the house"
What are you doing?"
"I just came back from bakery.See black power has gone to the evil spirit place."
"Ah God forbid we will not stay there.Snakes plenty in there."
"But they have paid already "
"Let me check it! Nothing will happen to you my brother "he went towards the unity street taking the short cut passes and when he got there black power was weeding the thickest environment ever seen in their tenancy years of over twenty five years in Lagos and not yet near their dream of reviving the family silver. Then panting again he went back to white power.
"White power come "
"Don't disturb me am eating"a great lover of barleys packed almost a full sack of breads commonly known as factory reject partially burnt or not fit for the market eating sumptuously and gluttonously"
He weeded the old place"his jaw dropped
"They called Abraham father of faith. You don't have faith. You re no more prayer warrior. You Ve lost it."
"Nothing like that."
A couple of days thereafter both white power and black power moved with in with upholstery and pots and pans and terrifying tons and stocks of Ghana must and old rice bags full of old newspapers and books to fill the rooms .This was after the washings and cleanings were completed at least to satisfactory level.White power now had confidence in his brother who was making fun of the comedy his brother sunny spread everywhere from laide ,nurse to the caretaker .
During the weeding exercise the virago from the adjoining compound with ramshackled building met  black power and saluted his cleaning effort and he quickly weeded the whole environment leaving the thorny bush and says.
"Young man you try the weeding exercise"black power looking peculiar.
"Yeah"
"You mean only three of you will stay in this compound this Bungalow the entire building"she added jealously black power muted not a word.
"You will clean it properly as if you sweep it clean with a broom".Then he briefed him
"The owner of the building like was from Oyo state"looking perplexed and jealous at an envious distance.
Black power was agog in the cleaning exercise for two or three day of almost half a plot radius. No money to pay labourer and later brought other belongings. He refused to bombard the heavy bush the moment he realised there was no functioning toilets out of the two toilets. While his brothers temporarily resorted to tidy up in the caretaker 's sprawling mansion that had visitor's toilets including bathing he also temporarily used the bush for unholy activities. Then he summoned courage to repair the toilet went to plumb shop in front of igando and bought badly needed plumbing materials and fix it himself He had met a plumber in the shop who was buying materials for his client
"Good morning how are you doing sir"
"Am fine and you?"
"Am okay too.See can help me fix our broken toilets?"
"How many two or three?"
"Two"
"Okay 60k.Do you agree?We have a deal?"
"Ahhh" he could not reply and it was too expensive and left the plumbing shop having already bought the equipments and materials although the same plumber had graphically exposed to him to use fire to melt the pipes into shapes of needed size and then fix the pipe. Finally he returned back home and fix only one toilet and saved thirty thousand naira. He had spent less than three thousand and raised funds from one tenant at home both used for feeding and plumbing works. They lived in a bit better position and ejection and debris from the toilet stopped indefinitely.Prior to the repairs, the one of the toilet worked partially being managed until he suspected fresh damage on the pipe and accused the grand kids of the virago as offenders. Then he vent his anger on the woman.
"Your children destroyed this and nobody play around the basin beyond this kids"curiously inquired for a simple explanation in the presence of fast approaching daughter who winced speedily from her stall selling liquor and ratchet alcohols in the wee of the night and thus Black power faced the worst night mare of his life resulting in the rain of imprecation from their venomous tonguesLike daughter and mother mudslingered
"E no go better for you and you and your generation.Stupid or oni sori re isi ati aeon idile e ni. "
"Never you curse me again something dey worry you"
"E no go better for you your generation your family will not gain you or oni so fire,o ma so ri bulu fun awa idile e ni.Won oni jere e rara."
"So you can't make simple analysis to defend your position " as they persist two daughters in the presence of mother teaching them to lay a curse in the presence of white power at evening who black power had warned not to utter a word though he did occasionally and he intermittently calmed giving that he knew him a terrible spate of anger.
A nother neighbor had intervened a little explanation was and he believed the kids damaged the pipes.
They kept quiet when he nailed them with grammar as if he was a Londoner born with the sound of the bowbells.
"I said keep quiet. You disgruntled elements you blockhead, dunderhead, wheezing like a grampus clung like a limpet hung at inverse proportion  to your own arboreal eyesore."
The interveing middle aged woman shocked backward and a little calm and it was over and yabbed them as scampered for breath inside
"You unscrupulous cocoons and Mongolian neanderthals " as uncouth tongue dispersed and held them on rampage. The incidence ever since had shown her character as a virago and a gutter harridan.
The ordeal of landlord tenant was certainly not juicy one a trouble some spots in the country and require egalitarian approach from regulatory authority to redress the ugly situation.

Political Intolerance In Nigeria.Chapter 7.page 4.

"Now we moved online and we can see the x-ray of the nation's election and post election related violence and we can see nothing has changed since 1999."
"Uhhhjmmmm.Embarasing !"
"Indeed little has changed.Ever since over 100years of political independence Nigeria's electoral engagement has not been short of crisis and violence.Aba women riots excluded election violence quite a turbulent matter as over 200 lives were lost in the 1964 /65 election period, the census riots Operation wetie of the period though not related. There was massive post election violence crisis following the 1983 election in which several lives and properties were lost and destroyed. The 1993 election was not however clean as they claimed it to be and many lives were lost too according to Beko Kutti head of campaigns for democracy over hundred peaceful demonstrators were gunned down by security agents as they were trying to curtail the violence offshoot of the July protests. The election of 1999 led to over hundred Nigerians badly injured and about 80 people were reportedly dead. The 2011 election violence with over 700 deaths spread across twelve states was worst case scenario unprecedented in the nation's history."
"Quite unfortunate .In 2015 and 2019 about 100 and 150 respectively were killed in the election related violence.
Lagos followed by Rivers state had the highest number of election related violence."
"You said Buhari was responsible for the election related deaths of 2011 right?"
"Yeah channels report check online their YouTube channel for the source .But he was alone"
"Like what are you driving at?"
"His deputy too was involved They made unguarded utterances "
"You mean our dear pastor bakare deputy president at congress for progressive change (CPC) in the south here?"
"Exactly."
"Do you have evidence?"
"Turn page 15 of the same papers."
"You mean this same paper I have read twenty times?"
"Are you kidding me?You don't even know people that buy papers on a daily basis barely read those papers?"
"What do you mean?"as he hurriedly turned to page 15 which reads.
"You mean this ?oh page 15 I saw it it reads "There will be wild wild North if PDP rigs-Bakare"
"So you see a man of God with terrifying prophetic power just because they were searching for power. That seem to have gone too far"
"That is terrible. So the journalist behind interview Mudiaga Affect quoted bakare that " the party will win the fourth coming elections but warn against rigging".Iet me read some:
'Many people have said you and the CPC presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari retd are the hardliners.Dont you think the two of you will be too hard for the polity?"
" That's a good thing for those who are mathematically inclined. Two negatives will produce a positive. If you think we will be too hard for polity give me the alternative. If you say we should maintain the status quo Nigeria will never come out of the woods .Let me tell you a story. In Niger state we went through four Emirates. Our last port of call was Etsu Nupe 's palace. When we finished the rally in Minna ,we could nt even get to the podium.I am not sure you know what is happening in the North. This man Buhari does not give money to anybody.Do you know what he pays for?He pays Hausa BBC Radio to announce venues of rallies. He pays for venues podiums and public address system. They don't (people) come here to eat. They bring their own water .This time of any election is rigged there will be wild wild North ;not wild wild west this time" around.I have told you to let you see the humanity of this balance that people don't know.I sat him down and ask him a direct question "Are you a shariah fundamelists ?
Let me know. because am not going to change

The Sky Is Not the limit.

We have reached the point of no return and the contraption of the past and the present might not be overturned as humus and fossils and fauna and flora and fungis
And manure and dungs for greater heights
And to those who still think it downright impossible they better think again given the fact that they find it pretty impossible
To get a good role model
When you re looking for a role model it can be daunting and very much easy depending on what you re looking for and we can be so petty especially the use of human art when no stressed and stretched to the limit to bring out the best quality of art from the pantheons of human reservoirs. The evolution of arts on the side of the artist looking for a role model certainly important on its own.
As they say iron sharpens and he seeks to be sharpened by greater iron too risk sharpening his own stone or iron of himself first and foremost prior to search of a greater iron to sharpen it
As you lay your bed you lay your head and as you lay your head you lay your bed.
Great minds with great target and great vision can compare and compete anywhere
And it is they this metals of sweet roses that can identify the true target and be inspired by the rue model once they identify one and seems to me the most difficult task of a becoming .
Depending on the human artist it has and when not blessed with good direction,he might not be able to pull it through where a good role model can aid the lessening of the huge burden involved in getting to your own destination.
When you re not bleeding but blessed with good direction good vision might pen and oratory the sky is not the limit.

Thorns And Thistles.part one

The ordeal of landlord tenant was certainly not juicy one a trouble some spots in the country and require egalitarian approach from regulatory authority to redress the ugly situation.

The Rational Degree Of Human Expectations.

I went through my library lately a repertoire of close to fifty years of newspapers archives and books stashed in layers of Ghana must go and shelves at a frightening proportion to any outside visitors.I just decided recently to supplement it with elaborate uses of internet sources and sometimes I marveled some information about our country or Africa was certainly missing on the net or generally not online.
However in the recent search I discovered an old article of Revend Sam Adeyemi who relocated abroad I think during endsars revolt.A column in the defunct Success Digest of Thursday September 22,2011 page 3.Thanks to Ojeagbeasu the silent mover of information marketing revolution and sport reporting revolution in Nigeria and I was surprised at his death no national burial was done.
Moreover in the piece by Sam Adeyemi pioneer at Day star academy Keys To Financial Success (2) A Window Of Opportunities.
He talks about expectations and enjoins  dreamers to dream big and be greater dresmers. He says"We need to increase our expectations to receive into our lives that which will move our lives forward. We must not shortchange ourselves with small expectations "
The he tells a story of a man who went down to the river one day to catch a fish": Whenever the hook jerked in his hand he pulled out a fish. Then he did something quite puzzling .He measured the fish with stick .If the fish was same size with the stick or shorter he dropped the fish in a basket.
But if the fish was longer than the stick he threw it back into the river .His friend who was all the while standing by asked with a puzzling look on his face."There must be a deep philosophy to your actions explain it to me "Then the young man explained that he had a frying pan at home.He measured the diameter of the frying pan with the stick.Any fish that was longer than the stick was too long so he threw it back into the river"
Then Adeyemi concluded that "the story may sound ridiculous. But in the same vein we sometimes reject the ideas and opportunities that seem too large for our thinking."That we should not allow the degree of our challenges to limit the depth of our success.
Honestly speaking the first iniquity of successful folks to a larger degree is the mentality of small fish and that is to say most dreamers and successful folks often endorse petty dreams.I observed at one point in my conversation with a friend that the same energy you require to make one thousand naira is the same energy you require to make a million,a billion etcetera. Most folks hardly believe that the same energy been wasted by say a vulcaniser or a weather or a bus conductor or hairdresser or Taylor or any of petty micro entrepreneur is the same energy a billionaire or capitalist is using to make mega fortune and that the poor like Adeyemi noted in the same essay are consuming more than they earn .Period.I don't think they re different.
The difference between the poor and the rich is the magnitude of the vision that makes a difference in the long run also in the magnitude of their expectations. It is fitting that we increase our expectations beyond our extant capacity.

Political Intolerance In Nigeria.Chapter 7.page 1.

The deadly spate of political Intolerance in Nigeria is a worrisome nightmare sending distressing to the polity and also international community Blackpower sat down to cudgel the whole messy situation and irremediable volleys of the unbridled menace against the Nigerian state.A cub reporter of several years was perturbed as he ransacked his home library at his alcove in recent times. He seems to confidence when he starts his debates with white power 001 and especially during the dining period.Whitepower had just come from his bakery who had complained of what he read in the papers. He bated his minds with black power before and after dining who cooked little beans for the day's stable.
"See what I saw in library killings before and after elections especially the rising threat of political Intolerance. These are distressing signals my brother."
"Let me see"as he attempted to gaze
"Don't worry let me read the Punch editorial of march 15,2011 page 14, entitled Checking the political Intolerance."
"Just the sacred part right!"
"He started by saying as the 2011 polls draws closer politicians in the political scene have put on abeyance the rules of electoral engagement sending distressing signals across the board. I mean the first paragraph. It further stated during the period Prof.Atahiru Jega INEC chairman delivered a speech in Abuja lamented the growing rate of political Intolerance .He said it had reached the extent in which state governors increasingly threatened opponents to the extent of refusing them the use of public facilities "
"You mean public facilities like stadia, media outfits, public gatherings with civil societies and vital outlets to post posters, billboards etcetera."
"Exactly. Then he joined them to imbibe tolerance culture by all ramifications for the nation to be able to conduct free polls."
"Oh you re reading the same paper the page 16 I have read turn to page 16.You will be shocked though I didn't see the editorial five years ago."
"You have read that too.Let me see page 16 Punch reports "Electioneering Claims 833 lives in four weeks"
"And the journalist involved Emeka right ?"
'Yeah Emeka Samuel reporting from Abuja.Quite shocking this is worst case scenario and I think they should stop that Electioneering and adopt your system of government marsocracy. We did not cook up the figures at least we quote the source."
"Exactly information should bring transformation. That is what we re saying.See the part I was reading."
"See before you go back to earlier source read it complete".
"Emaka writes"In just four weeks no fewer than 833 Nigerians lost their lives in road accidents that arise from increased tempo of campaigns by political parties in April general elections."He went onto say the 833 four weeks road carnage figure is the same number of deaths recorded in the first six months of 2010."
"Don't you see quite tragic.Mr Osita Chidoka the then Corps Marshall and chief executive officer of what ....."
"Federal Road safety corps confirmed the figure on one Monday "during the inauguration of 100 new patrol vehicles and extricating the equipment in Abuja."
"Read on!"as he adjusted himself on the dining seat.
"Osita who described the situation as frightening lamented that campaign posters had displaced or overshadowed road signs on major highways and other major roads in the country.
That he was" appalled by the ugly development" and noted 'the commission wrote to all political parties for safety collaboration but regretted that the expected partnership was not effective."
Within four weeks leading to the publication 833 deaths linked to the increase in the tempo of political campaigns quite worrisome "
"He hoped the release of 100 patrol vehicles by the agency was to contribute to reduction of carnage in line with what....."
"Let me see.......in line with "the country 's vision of becoming one of the 20 safest countries of the world by the year 2020"
"Which year are we now?"
"Year 2025."
"Has the spate of deaths linked to Electioneering reduced ever since?"
"Nope."
"Read on"
"He said "The acquisition of 180 patrol vehicles in 2008 was the first time since the establishment of the corps that such a number of vehicles were injected into its operational...."
".. operational fleet."black power mimicked
"First time uhmmmm still by 2020 failed to achieve its objective by 2020."
"You can see every institution in Nigeria are chasing shadows and not meeting their goals and objectives whether they have access to facilities or not."
"So it is not whether they have facilities or not., maybe curse was placed on Nigeria.I think it was alaafin aole curse."
"Exactly nothing is working. You know Soyinka founded road safety and he was accused of siphoning over five hundred million from the corps coffers."
"Yes but the man had debunked the allegations and expressed his views that he was even funding the corps with his own pocket money. So that allegation was baseless."
"Go back to prior page.Which page is that again?"
"Page 14."
"Okay".

The Sky Is Not the limit.

Forlorn Roses

Now shall the shallow blood warm fendeth raw upon the fuller's soap,
And lookest thy crystal glass in thy feelest cold ,
To straw the sum of thy kindred account with the vilest roses
As lusty treasures benign leaps of sunken eyes
And your beloved elopes the substerfuge of forlorn times
The wrinkles of shrinking violet bespattered the golden usury of thriftless eulogy for summon of oracles in the leapfrog of yonder heights,
Then let not thy hideous steam bedraggle beneath nuances of your harmattan haze
Where the beauty of sweet treasure forbidd the usury of distilling showers in beautiful spring
Can happiness be loaned from a loan book and be ten times sweeter by its lustre than honey combs?
Then what could happiness amiss do if thou shouldest fail to pluck it from the vineyard of pyrhic victory
Leaving thee bland for posterity?
Feeble hands with feeble eyes in dunk dotards reeleth to pay homage not adorned by feeble feet
Why cravest wanton dire in displeasing notes
All in the silly vile to dote the beautiful songs caroling the fantasy of the beautiful dreams,
As fast as thou shalt fade with forlorn times,
So fast shall thou growest in sunny times
Whereon estranged folly begat thee knight of old
And then behold your sweet roses begat thee stardom of sunny times
That you say 'many are the uses of adversity '
But in unthrifty land of forlorn times
"adversities are the uses of prosperity '
To make the bait for the moult of forlorn times
Changes cometh in the beautiful spring to the sinking shore
Where many miles of viles and encroaching miles evanesce in broken flights
O that you may dope 'many are the uses of adversity 'even much more as the forlorn times day 'adversities are the uses of prosperity '.
Princes and princesses of gold pluck the golden stars from forlorn times
Where wilderness sands as wilderness ramblings pluck their golden robes .
Behold now your beneath and pluck thy golden roses from forlorn times.
Oh not the forlorn times but forlorn roses of the golden hills.

(Note the poem was written after inordinate incident happened in the writer's abode where some tubers of banana were plucked his brother in the survival jungles and virago neighbors kids went mad hurling abuses against his brother for allegedly plucking the tubers. The rain of diatribes on both sides of the divides was quite intimidating including virago using native language to rain imprecation and Bard using Poetic language to rain malediction.A bit was written below.)

Toni Morrison Vs Wole Soyinka

There can be no doubt Wole Soyinka as the greatest black man ever has produced the best and the highest population black leadership in millions that black Africa and black folks world wide ever had.I have extensively undergo magnanimous transformation of my medulla about everything I knew about Kongi and what I did found was more than astonishing.Being the first nobel,he was a fellow inspirer to latter Nobels and certainly influenced the accomplishment of Tony Morrison first black female Nobel in black Africa world wide.
Tony Morrison like Derek Walcott and Nadine Gordimer was fond of Kongi and had championed his courses and advocacies worldwide. She saw Wole Soyinka as prime motivation an inspirational figure and personal excitement about kongi was expressed in a 2024 piece in The Republic that discusses her advocacy for him.The Soyinka lecture delivered at the Toni Morrison lecture series in 2016 entitled Sweet Are the Uses Of Adversity, was particularly enthralling.
First we examine the checkered antecedence of the first female black Nobel from her first novel The Bluest Eyes published in 1970 to the controversially acclaimed Songs of Solomon brought her to national limelight and earned her National Book Critics Circle Awards.
Winfrey once wrote on Instagram "In the beginning was the word Toni Morrison took the word and turned it into the songs of Solomon ,of sula, beloved, mercy and paradise love and more." Then she says "She was our conscience .Our seer. Our truth teller. She was a magician with language who understood the power of words. She used them to roil us,to wake us,to educate us and help us grapple with our deepest wounds and try to comprehend them."
Over the years her intimidating laurels and honours certainly speaks volumes of her checkered antecedence . Apparently she was decked with trophies such as Pulitzer prize ,the nobel prize, presidential medal of freedom awardedbto her by president Obama in 2012 and also awarded with the Legion de Honneur.
Obviously she came to her senses one day only to find out according to her the book she wanted to read did not exist and she had to change the world by contributing her quota to black freedom. It took her five years to write Bluest eye and during the period moved to New York city and started her publishing career. She published books by Muhammad Ali, Henry Dumas and Angela Davis.Bluest eye came out with an Initial print runs of 2,000 copies .She resigned in 1983 from Random house and focused on full writing and published Beloved in 1987 at the time of a year after Soyinka got a Nobel. It was a story of slave set in the middle of findesiecle who kills her own baby. When the novel failed to receive her deserved attention and improved the shortlisting on national book award petition from 48 writers signed protest letter accusing the publishing industry of "Oversight and harmful whimsy ".
While complaints were bandied about by writers despite her international status that she has yet to receive the prestige that her five major works of fiction deserve,be it Pulitzer or nobel. And surprisingly five months later the much vaunted awards rolled him in a flux.Beginning from Pulitzer or national book award won by the book Beloved and by 1993 became the first black woman to win the Nobel topped up with national book foundation in 1996 and national humanities medal four years after.
While reacting to the shooting of Travyon Martin he outlined two things":Two things I want to see in life. One thing is a white kid shot in the back by a cop.Never happened. The second thing I want to see:a record of any white man in the entire history of the world who has been convicted of raping a black woman.Just one."
She once called Bill Clinton the nation's first black president in 1998 in the attempt to defend him as a black woman "writing without the white gaze".Her last book of essay collection Mouth Full Of Blood was published in 2019 her last year on earth.
We examined how Wole Soyinka influenced black writers of which Morrison was a paramount ensembles laying wreath and garland at the feet of prime motivation the Kongo himself. Her most powerful word"We die"she said "that maybe the meaning of life. But we do language. That maybe the measure of our lives."
It is not for nothing Margaret Atwood call her "A giant of her times and ours.....That her strong voice will now be missing in this age of the renewed targeting of minorities in the united states and elsewhere is a tragedy for the rest of us."
In the collection of interviews comprising of black  creative thinkers and nobels like wole Soyinka,Tony Morrison, Michelle Obama, bonded into a book chronicled by Sarah Ladipo Manyika ,publisher Margaret Busby, poet Claudine Rankine, historian Henry Louis Gates jnr.,film maker Xoliswa Sithole to name a few.The interview was done on the occasion of his third novel Chronicles from the land of happiest people on earth which sees reflect on the theme of his works mainly friendship which he described as" almost a mystical things".

“Friendship, to Me, Is What Saves One’s Sanity”: Wole Soyinka
Between Starshine and Clay: Conversations from the African Diaspora is a collection of interviews by Sarah Ladipo Manyika. Her guests are prominent Black creatives, thinkers, leaders, and organizers, including Nobel laureates Wole Soyinka and Toni Morrison, former US First Lady Michelle Obama, poet Claudine Rankine, publisher Margaret Busby, historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr., filmmaker Xoliswa Sithole, actor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, US Senator Cory Booker, parliamentarian Lord Michael Hastings, and civil rights activist Pastor Evan Mawarire. The book, with an introduction by Bernardine Evaristo, was listed among our Anticipated Books of 2023.

The interview below, with Soyinka, is excerpted from the much longer one in the book. Done on the occasion of his third novel, Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth, it sees him reflect on a theme in his works: friendships, something he describes as “almost a mystical thing.” And one of his friends makes a cameo: Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Sarah Ladipo Manyika - Between Starshine and Clay

Wole Soyinka: In Conversation
Sarah Ladipo Manyika:

Your latest novel, Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth, is, among other things, a story of lifelong friendships. I found it to be a novel that moves to the beats of Fela Kuti and, in visual terms, it made me think of William Hogarth’s painting of eighteenth century London and of Yinka Shonibare’s more contemporary images. It also had a particular personal resonance because I grew up in Jos, one of the main locations for this novel. The novelist Ben Okri said of this novel: ‘This is a novel written at the end of an artist’s tether. It has gone beyond satire. It is a last dance macabre.’ Professor Soyinka, was this book written at the end of your tether?

Wole Soyinka:

Ben Okri, when I see him, I’m going to hammer his head because that particular quotation keeps cropping up and I can understand why. To some extent it is true. I’ve explored this theme, as you remarked, through various genres, including poetry, which in the course of reading I found myself uncharacteristically breaking down. It was as bad as that, when I attempted to read A Humanist Ode for Chibok, Leah I could not complete it. So, this thing has gone beyond mere poetizing, it’s gone beyond fodder for creative transformation, for creative mauling, reconfiguring of realities, even beyond a prospectus for survival. So, Ben is absolutely spot on there. At the same time, however, it is not at the end of one’s tether for the simple reason that there is a challenge implicitly embedded in it. When there’s a challenge, it means you are actually saying that this is not the end of the story; that it’s sufficient to be able to hold up a distorting mirror in an unaccustomed way to a community of which one is a part and from whose existence one takes one’s own definition, has done for decades. And so, that element of challenge, which I hope is apparent there, means that one hasn’t really given up on the nation, on the people, even if one thinks it’s about time one bowed out.

Sarah Ladipo Manyika:

Friendship has always seemed to be something really important to you. We see this in both your fiction and non-fiction, and your latest novel has friendship at its center. The last memoir you wrote, You Must Set Forth at Dawn, was a homage to Femi Johnson, and your latest novel is also dedicated to him, Dele Giwa and Bola Ige. You’ve had so many interesting friendships across the years—from the poet Christopher Okigbo to scholar Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and to your fellow Nobel laureates, Bertrand Russell and Toni Morrison.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Toni Morrison in her home. In her bathroom there are many amazing photographs, one of which was of her with you—a lovely black-and-white photograph. I mentioned this to Toni as we sat down, saying, “Oh, I’ve just seen one of my countrymen”—you see, my Nigerian pride—“I’ve just seen Professor Wole Soyinka in your bathroom.” She said, “Oh yeah, we used to go to Paris and we’d go and have meetings and talk—elegant talk—and solve world problems. And Soyinka always knew how to solve everything.” And then the two of us said in unison, “He still does.” Then she responded, mimicking a deep voice, “Yes, yes! In that voice he has.” So, in that deep voice you have, can you tell us a story about Toni Morrison?

Soyinka:

Well, first I came to Toni Morrison through her works and I said, “This really is genius writing.” I cannot recall when we first met, probably because when we met eventually it was like I knew her already, like we’d already met. But from the very first-time moment, we bonded. There’s no question at all about that. And I set about trying to bring her to Nigeria right away to meet other writers. And then we’d go out together. And she was responsible for an expression which left such an impression on me. She said, “I’m going to take you out to this restaurant. The cooking there, it’ll knock your socks off.” I’d never heard that expression in my life. I said, ‘What?’ She said, “It will knock your socks off!” Well, maybe because in Africa we wear sandals most of the time, who wears socks? Only the gentry! It’ll knock your socks off, and that image was something that came from her language.

It was her language and it endeared me. And more than that, however, was her sensibility toward the problems of the African continent. She was very much involved. She’d ask questions, sort of how-could-that-be-going-on kind of questions. Genuine concern. And so I saw, as we say in Nigeria, she was another country woman, but a very, very close one. Friendship to me is what saves one’s sanity, friendship is seeking nothing, no advantage from the other person, but always knowing that it is there, that it’s assistance if you need it. And you simultaneously are ready any time. It’s almost a mystical thing. Those who have experienced genuine friendship should appreciate how very lucky they are, because it’s not often, to actually say this is a genuine friend. I have had some very deep friendships with people, like Femi Johnson, who you mentioned.

Obviously it shows strategically a little bit bonding and I suspect Henry Louis gates also in the interview collection doing all the connection stuff.Though they met in their stardom definitely Soyinka altered the literature for black race in general
