The Smiling Coast

 The Smiling Coast (The Gambia)
A sonnet on the river that defines a nation and the warmth of its people.
A silver ribbon through the dusty plains,
The Gambia flows to meet the cooling sea,
A land where ancient hospitality remains,
And every heart is generous and free.
Along the banks, the colorful pirogues glide,
Through mangroves where the kingfishers descend,
With nothing but the rhythm of the tide,
To greet the stranger as a long-lost friend.
From Kunta Kinteh’s island in the stream,
To Banjul’s markets where the colors flare,
The nation lives within a peaceful dream,
Under the warmth of sun-drenched tropic air.
Small in the stretch of earth it occupies,
But vast in every smile that greets the eyes.
