THE UNBOOTABLE
LAPTOP
Have you experienced
a situation whereby you boot or put on the laptop and there”s no activity? That
is unbootable system .What do you do in
that kind of situation ? This troubleshooting requires a deeper
observation.When there ‘s no activity ,it can be caused by two major factors
.First either the hard disk drive and the software in it is bad or the problem lies with motherboard or its
items .Pure and simple .
Now lwt”s move on –unbootability means no activity
or no screen display and the
system can hardly boot up to a level to reach the working environment of the
windows for you to use..Motherboard could be the cause or any its items or the HDD
and its software .
To run diagnosis,you
have to pieces them apart or separate to
narrow to the problem spot.First remove HDD from the motherboard including its
items to find out the problem component
.You have to first solve the motherboard problem and its items even when the
software and the HDD have no problem .Otherwise you get nothing done .
When you remove HDD
now boot the system .If the motherboard
and its components come up with the following information pieces such as
the motherboard manufacturer”s name ;the RAM size ;and the Pentium and
processor”s speed –that is to show the motherboard and its components are okay
.And then you can now narrow down to HDD.Assuming that the above pieces of
information are not displayed then you troubleshoot further in various the
motherboard and its items .These include RAM,CMOS BATTERY AND THE PROCESSOR .
The first port of
call during troubleshooting of motherboard and its components is the RAM .At
least you can remember what RAM does –basically for display.Take the RAM of the
system under troubleshooting and fix it into another well functioning Laptop or
even 2nd and 3rd similar working types .This allows you
to try and see whether the RAM is the problem or not .If it fails to display in
those working laptops ,then you can say truly the RAM is the problem or is bad.
For solid proof ,take their RAMs I mean of these fully working laptops and try
it one by one on the system under troubleshooting ,you would find out they
would display items on the screen board .
That is to tell you that the RAM of the system under troubleshooting is
truly bad .That is the problem of the drivers and it requires change .Buy new
one and replace it .
In some cases RAM is
found under Laptop “s keyboard or sometimes you see it at the back of the
Laptops .That is why you must always
check the back of the system first. It may require open either panels at
the back to see RAM or open keyboard at
times to see it or identify it.It goes both ways .
But if you fix the
RAM of the system under troubleshooting
into the first ,second and third Laptops and it displays that is to say the RAM
is not the problem .Then you troubleshoot further on the motherboard and its
items .
THE NEXT IS CMOS
BATTERY AND THE PROCESSOR
There are two types
of CMOS battery –external and internal-being a fully integrated type .If the
external is bad you have to change it
and that is after you have done elaborate troubleshooting on it.Buy new
one and replace it on the motherboard. Before you can see CMOS battery that
requires dissembling and applying the method we taught earlier.
Now let”s move onto
the processor. Also ,it has two types onboard both external and
internal-integrated type.If you have done your trouble shooting and found out
the type that is faulty is the
intergrated onboard type ,there”s
nothing you can do than to change the whole of the motherboard .
The troubleshooting
at this level is almost the final step in the motherboard area especially after the motherboard is booted and is still not
displaying the three pieces of information we noted earlier..That is up to the
processor level which means you almost true with trouble shooting of the
motherboard and its components .
What now remains ,is
clean up the dirty system or the dirts in the motherboard and fix loose
cables and card not properly fitted and
tightens up the loose screws and see if
the motherboard is going to work . If it fails it is advisable for you to
change the mother board .But if the processor is external –a removable non
integrated type you can trouble shoot further .Remove it and fix it into a
system of similar types to the one under troubleshooting .If the motherboard
fails to show the three pieces of information ,that motherboard is bad
.Otherwise it must work or else it must be replaced completely .
After all your trouble
shootings at this stage , on every item ,boot the system to see whether it
would work .Having solved the motherboard and the components architecture , we
now move to HDD and Software –a new level .
HDD AND THE SOFTWARE
We are now through
with the motherboard and its items ,fix them back including the HDD to the
system under repair and boot the system .This is vital because there are
situations in which after solving motherboard problems and its components and
they began to display these pieces of information you fix the HDD back and the
system began to work or function properly That tells volume that the
motherboard was the problem and its components and not HDD and its software
.But in another cases,after fixing the back HDD into the system and the system
still does not show or display these pieces of information ,you have to
troubleshoot further .
In this case the two
major approaches of ten applied by engineers to solve laptop problems under
repair .-first the easy way and then the hard way .They both depend on the
choice of the system owner and when you
know how to apply it is not very difficult.Now listen below
For the easy way ,the
method is to simply ask the owner or client whether he needs the files or not
.If he says he doesn”t need them then go ahead to format the system .
The installation of
the operating system is simply regarded as formatting .We are talking of
installation of windows operating system .All you need to do is to put the operating system CD/DVD
into the C.DROM/DVD .ROM Drive to
copy the registry files after the HDD inspection .
This process
automatically partitions HDD giving suggestions whether you want to repair or
format the system .For repair , you press ‘’R” but for format you press “F’’
keyboard .
Now let ‘s move to
the difficult way .In this method you ask the Laptop owner and if he says he
needs the files you can’t format the files straight away lest you wipe out his
precious files .That means you have to
recover the files in that system first before formatting and after recovering
those files ,you put it into a working system .To recover these files you have
to use external universal serial bus –USB
connector plug it to HDD from which trapped files can be recovered .Then
plug the USB cable to a working laptop or desktop commuter where you are
transferring the files .
Generally in a laptop
computer ,we have two main drives:C Drive as evident is the resident HDD not
partitioned including D:Drive which is for resident CD/DVD-ROM Drive .With
these resources we can get the job done .
Outside C and D ,the
next letter according to automatic functions of the system is given to additional
device plugged into the system to recover files using first come first served
basis to name and fill them .So the HDD of the laptop under repair in which you
are trying to recover files automatically named E:by the system during its
recovery operation of the difficult way
..This identification allows you to carry out your operation in what is called
“copy and paste formula”.Simple! But how ?
On your LCD screen
,double click my computer using left button of your mouse and mobve to E:and
then right click onit using your mouse external or internal.When a dialogue box
appear and you see various options ,you
can choose from such as open,search ……format ,copy among others .Click copy to
copy the trapped files .
Then proceed to
C;when you right click and the dialogue box appear this time around you click
paste among the options .Automatically this copies the trapped files from the HDD of a faulty
system into the connected working system .It then paste it into the new system
HDD of properly working laptop .Shikenna!In
this way you have recovered the client files prior to formatting .Otherwise
formatting before execution of hard way automatically clears off all the files
that get lost forever .This is a disservice to your clients .
It is also
interesting you can create a folder in which all this files can be deposited it
is like an envelope where you copy and paste all the files from E: to C:where
it is resident .Note that the HDD you are trying to recover files from or
format and connected to working laptop ,provided
HDD was partitioned could also be named letter F :,G:etc automatically by the
system itself .After copy and paste process,remove USB connector from HDD drive
,return it back to laptop and start formatting .-install operating system .But
be warned –never format before the hardway.It comes after .
After formatting
–installation of operating system and other softwares return the recovered
files back to the system.Note that the
discovery of flash drive makes it easier or everything simple in this process.Instead
of having to remove the HDD of a working laptop where you saved the files take
the flash and connect it to the one under repair through external USB connector
and then apply the copy and paste formula .Then you copy it into the flash drive from
the laptop under repair .This means copy and paste from your flash drive into drive C; to complete
recovery process.It’s pretty simple.
SOME CONDITIONS THAT DISCOURAGE
COPY AND PASTE METHOD
This includes the
following –
..----Assumming the
system registry files being the files through which your boots and works were deleted or operating system corrupted
,this method would not work ;
------Any system
attack or infested by powerful virus also discouraged this method ;
------It would not work
if HDD has crashed or has expired its lifecycle .
Factors such as
natural disasters like thunders,earthquakes ,storm, or fiery lightning
,electricity induced fire incident ;and man made fire;power outages from NEPA or generator set .These are the major causes behind HDD crash .Also it should not allowed
to fall carelessly to the ground ,inability to allow the system to do scan disk
properly when it was not shut down properly is another major impediment against
the functionality of HDD.
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY –LCD
TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM –LTP
Often times the
screen is not bad yet as long as something is still showing on that screen .You see as long as something is still
blinking ,you see the cursor , the pointer on LCD screen is not bad yet or you could see the operating even though faintly or very faintly is not bad yet This provides the
greenlight to begin troubleshooting on the spot .
To dare conclude the
screen at the boot the system first and
plug to VGA port and external monitor ,then boot the system.Also ,check the RAM
Because the screen maybe ok but RAM maybe bad so that it does not display –its
major function so as to show information .In this display issue is invariably ,
the first port of call and suspect .
Normally , if you
have applied these methods and still
does not show any information ,we have
to dissemble the system to locate the problem especially the flex cable area or
where the normal cable is plugged and
see whether it is cut bad or dislocated .You may need to also check if the
screen is broken ,bad evident with broken hinges including the brass iron
–plastic iron ]connectors whether they
are bad or broken .
These are the
parameters for you to use to judge to
know that the screen is bad and fail to display after troubleshooting .The
solution is to buy another LCD screen of the same model to solve the
problem and then replace it.
UNDERSTANDING BIOS
A simple diagram
written to navigate motherboard is called BIOS –basic input output system .It
can be located before windows environment or complete booting .It is the main
brain of the board or the kernel of computer operation .It can only be used by
skillful engineers in most cases to manipulate the main board of the computer
.So understanding the BIOS truly is simply understanding completely the laptop
system .
To
get to the BIOS ,boot the system and as the screen the loads at the top or
bottom of the screen press the available as specified on the screen that would
take you to BIOS working environment –F2,,F4,,F6,F7…F10,Del,CTRLplus ALT
....etc .It gives further commands when you follow its instruction and press
remaining buttons before reaching BIOS .This must done continuously to enter
the BIOS set up .But if you slow to respond to keyboard touch ,the system would
move quickly pass the BIOS environment and you have to shut done the system to
restart and reboot it .
When
you get to BIOS environment there are no
many keys specified there at your disposal to navigate BIOS .Note also each
laptop has different BIOS settings and BIOS formation respectively depending on
their brands .Understanding the BIOS is
very important for an engineer because if you hardly know it and you enter into
the BIOS environment without knowing how to operate you might disable the
system or spoil it. Indeed it is the most delicate area of the system .There
you set the time ,the booting operation speed and date .All drivers are
manipulated there be it VGA drivers, sound drivers ,USB……….You also determine where
the system should boot be it from HDD CD-ROM
etc .
In
the words of my great mentor one of the leading Laptop engineers in the West
African region-Jacob Agitan he writes …
…”I
must say here that BIOS configuration
–setting is very ,very important for the efficient and effective
Performance
of your laptop computer system .There are factory settings and settings you can
make on BIOS ..But trying to set configure a device you don’t know ,and setting
it wrongly on the BIOS would make your laptop computer system to malfunction .Therefore set configure only
what you know on the BIOS “.
These
are the golden words of my mentor standing the test of time and I think quack
has never survived in this hardy terrain .So beware BIOS intrigues can only be
tamed by competent engineers.
ULTIMATE ADVICE
Read
this manner religiously several times over and apply it continuously until you master it effectively by practice .Apply
it relentlessly because it can solve over 90 percent of laptop computer
problems. A great distant mentor Julius Ojeagbeasu once said :”if you don’t
learn how to repair laptop today ,you will blame yourself later’’. I lost all
of files on my system before I decided to learn how it works and knowing a
little about it helps saves your files yourself and others from losing precious
documents and also for general repair works of an engineer.You can also

engines like Google etc. .A little
simple search can save a lot of problems and a lot of money . If you are trying
