The Dangers of Micro-Sleeps

The Dangers of "Micro-Sleeps" and Drowsy Driving
While much attention is paid to intoxication, drowsiness is a similarly lethal impairment. A "micro-sleep" is a brief, involuntary episode of unconsciousness that can last just a few seconds—enough time for a car to veer off a bridge or into oncoming traffic. The brain essentially shuts down to recover, leaving the vehicle unguided. The only cure for fatigue is sleep; neither loud music nor caffeine can replace the restorative power of a 20-minute nap. Choosing to pull over is an act of maturity that acknowledges the biological limits of the human machine.
