The Ethics of Sobriety

The Ethics of Sobriety Within the Wheel
Driving is a social contract, an agreement that we will operate heavy machinery in a way that doesn't endanger others. Choosing to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a breach of that contract. Impairment begins long before a person "feels drunk"; it starts with the subtle erosion of judgment and the slowing of peripheral vision. The tragedy of DUI-related accidents is their total avoidability. In an era of ride-sharing and instant communication, there is no logistical excuse for impaired driving. Safety on the road depends on the collective realization that a single "good time" is never worth the permanent weight of a life lost.
