PHAMARCEUTICAL INDUSTRY AND EVOLUTION IN NIGERIA.PART 5

From the fourth phase-1983 - 1986 onward to 1986 and beyond, depicts each stages of growth and institutionaldevelopment that took the industry by storm.Though the story did not take the african medicinal tradition of the pre slavery or precolonial, colonial and immediate post colonial period as documented in some books like African Medicine, that detailed our forefathers'herbal exploits, there are variations, certainly in the periods highlighted. In thefirst phase,Zacheus Bailey started with the establishment of first phamarcy,in Nigeria in Lagos. The phamarceutical business during the period was dominated by imported brands like May&Baker,Beecham,J.L.Morrison,Glaxo,Pfizer etc. That was evidence of no local manufacturing capacity whatsoever, during the period. The second phase covered the period when foreign multinationals began to establish their factories locally.In1958,Glaxo came in,and by 1962and1963 respectively,Pfizer and Sterling arrived and opened shops.Wellcome opened shop in 1967 and a year after P.Z.came.
