The furnace blasted a blinding white heat through the cramped cellar. Isaac wore thick leather gloves, his face covered in soot as he hammered a piece of fallen meteorite onto his anvil. It was 1898. Yesterday, a young scientist named Julian had brought him a shattered glass vial containing a glowing blue residue from the future. Julian had begged him to build a casing that could stabilize the temporal radiation. Isaac carefully poured the liquefied stardust into the gears of a brass pocket watch, setting the master gear to lock completely at 4:13. As the metal cooled, the air in the cellar turned freezing cold, smelling heavily of fresh rain and ozone. Isaac looked up just in time to see Julian vanish into thin air, leaving behind only an unopened envelope with a wax seal on the workbench. Isaac picked up the finished watch. It didn’t tick.
The Blueprint of Time
CHARACTERS:ISAAC (50s): A brilliant, reclusive 19th-century clockmaker.
JULIAN (30s): A time-traveler from the future, desperate and weak.[SETTING: A dark workshop filled with hanging gears, pendulums, and a roaring forge fire.]
[AT RISE: ISAAC is using a magnifying lens to inspect the core of a brass pocket watch.
JULIAN leans against a wooden pillar, coughing violently.]
JULIAN
Is the containment vessel holding? The radiation... it's tearing my cells apart.
ISAAC
(Without looking up)The meteorite iron is absorbing the blue fluid, yes. But you are forcing eternity into a mechanical cage, boy.
JULIAN
It’s not a cage, Isaac. It’s a bridge. My partner Elena is trapped in a memory loop on a vessel called the Horizon. I have to reach her.
ISAAC
To cross that bridge, you must anchor the mechanism to a single point in existence. A moment that cannot be altered.
JULIANThe moment the loop began. When she took the serum. The lab clock read 4:13.
ISAAC(Stops working, looks up)Then I will break the mainspring at that exact coordinate. But heed this warning. Once the stem is snapped, the user will be thrown into the loop with her. You will forget this room. You will forget me.
JULIAN(Takes a sealed envelope from his coat, sets it down)If I forget, this letter will remind me. Seal the watch, Isaac. Before the train out of this century leaves without me.[Isaac uses heavy pliers to snap the winding stem. A loud CRACK echoes. The forge fire instantly turns bright blue.]
