The Nocturnal Tide

Sonnet I: The Nocturnal Tide

(A Shakespearean sonnet exploring the quiet stillness of night and the persistence of memory, following an ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme and iambic pentameter.)

The silent moon ascends the velvet height,And spills its silver on the sleeping sea.The whispering breezes of the fading light,Bring forth a sudden, gentle thought of thee.Though shadows lengthen and the world grows cold,And all the bustling streets are wrapped in rest,I watch the steady stars of white and gold,With every quiet longing in my breast. For distance cannot break the tethered mind,Nor can the rushing river wash it away.In every quiet space I chance to find,My soul outruns the borders of the day.Though time and space divide us, near and far,I see your spirit in the evening star.
