A hiker got lost in the woods just as the sun dipped below the trees. Out of the darkness, a single firefly landed on his sleeve. Instead of a greenish blink, its tiny lantern cast a sharp, brilliant beam of white light, exactly like a flashlight. The insect flew a few feet ahead, hovered until the hiker stepped forward, and then moved again. It guided him safely to the edge of the highway before turning off its light and vanishing into the night.
