The Echoes Of Yesterday

Echoes of Yesterday

The antique shop was suffocatingly quiet. Arthur held a brass pocket watch that didn’t tick. The glass face was cracked, trapping the hands forever at 4:13. He had bought it an hour ago from a man who refused to take his money, insisting the watch already belonged to him. Arthur wound the stem. A sharp chill pierced the air. The smell of old paper vanished, replaced by the scent of fresh rain and ozone. He looked out the shop window. The bustling 2026 city street was gone. Instead, horses and carriages rolled down a cobblestone road under gas lamps. A newspaper boy ran past, shouting about the treaty of 1898. Arthur panicked and tried to spin the watch stem backward. It snapped off in his fingers. The shop door clicked open behind him.

The Final Frontier
CHARACTERS:
CAPTAIN VANCE (40s): Exhausted commander of a dying vessel.
REI (20s): The ship's optimistic engineer.
[SETTING: The bridge of a spaceship. Red emergency lights pulse slowly. A massive viewing window shows a swirling black hole.]
[AT RISE: VANCE is buckled into the pilot's seat, typing furiously into a dead console.
REI stands near the engine access panel, covered in soot.]
REI
The thrusters are completely dead, Captain. The gravity well has us.
VANCE(Without looking up)
There is always an alternative, Rei. Reroute the life support power to the shields.
REI
That gives us five minutes of protection, but zero oxygen. We will suffocate before we cross the event horizon.
VANCE
If we cross the horizon with shields up, the data pod survives. Earth gets the telemetry. They learn how to harvest the energy.
REI
And we become ghosts in a graveyard of stars. Is that our legacy?
VANCE(Stops typing, looks at Rei)
Our legacy is saving the two billion people who are starving in the dark back home. Pull the fuse.
[Rei hesitates, then rips a glowing blue cylinder from the wall. The hum of the ship stops. Total silence fills the room.]
REI
(Quietly)Power transferred. Shields at maximum.
VANCE
Thank you, engineer. See you on the other side.[The view outside the window turns blindingly white.][Blackout.]
