Sonnet II: The Urban Rain

The heavy storm descends on Lagos streets,Where crowded markets pause beneath the grey,The rhythmic drumming on the roof repeats,And washes all the dust of noon away.The yellow buses navigate the flood,Through winding paths of Ijegun they go,While children splash in water, red with mud,And watch the busy river overflow.But when the clouds depart, the air is sweet,The golden sun reflects on every pane,A lively vigor rises from the heat,And life resumes, reborn from sudden rain.Though storms may bring the heavy day to test,The washing rains will always bring the best
